My Research

Using synthetic chemistry and molecular design to create bespoke molecules that perform a useful function.

In my lecturer position at Lancaster University I am drawing upon all my expertise to develop fluorescent materials for security inks with unique security features and to develop highly robust pi-conjugated photocatalysts that are photobleach resistant for incorporation in flow chemistry systems.

Robust photocatalysts

Development of new pi-conjugated photocatalysts with strong-bonding throughout the system. My Royal Society Research Grant (started 1st Dec 2023) supports the development of bespoke pi-conjugated molecules for photocatalysis, and has funded Asynt and Uniqsis batch reactors and a flow reactor for photocatalyst development.

Fluorescent materials

We are making fluorescent materials that self-assemble on surfaces for various optical/optoelectronic applications, including security inks with unique security features.

Molecular electronics

We prepare pi-conjugated molecules and tune their electrical and thermal conductance, including work with collaborators at Liverpool on carbodithioate ester contact groups for single-molecule junctions.

Carbon monoxide-releasing materials

We are designing materials to kill bacteria and prevent biofilm formation.
